Time loop stories turn repetition into the engine of the plot. A day, battle, journey, or deadly sequence begins again while one or more characters remember what happened before and use that knowledge to change their choices. The movies on this page range from comedy and romance to science fiction, horror, and action, but each makes recurring time central to the conflict. Unlike ordinary time-travel films, these stories repeatedly return to the same interval rather than simply sending characters into the past or future. 1993
Cynical television weatherman Phil Connors travels to Punxsutawney for a routine Groundhog Day assignment, only to wake up to the same February 2 again and again. With no one else aware of the repetition, he tests the loop’s limits while gradually confronting how he treats the people around him.
Phil consciously relives February 2 over and over, and learning how to change himself and ultimately break the repeating day drives the entire film.
2014
In a war against an alien force, inexperienced officer William Cage is killed during a disastrous assault and wakes at the start of the same day. Forced to relive the battle, he trains with celebrated soldier Rita Vrataski and uses each reset to search for a way to change humanity’s fate.
